EAT
“Mother Nature is a true artist and our job as cooks is to allow her to shine.”
~ Marco Pierre White
Here at Julia’s Local we cook what we love to eat, and our daily à la carte menu ~ which changes every single day ~ celebrates a wide variety of just-harvested produce from our own one-acre culinary garden.
We serve American comfort food, with a European twist. Chef Henning Nordanger honors his Norwegian heritage by using his favorite Scandinavian recipes and techniques such as curing, pickling, and fermenting ingredients. At the same time, he enjoys incorporating traditions rooted in his training (now almost 40 years ago) in French cuisine ~ one that is devoted to rich and flavorful sauces and slow-cooked meats and poultry.
Most notably, we serve fresh-water trout from six-generation-run Beaverkill Trout Hatchery, located right here in the northern Catskills. Brook, rainbow, and brown trout. Other favorite cold water fishes such as North Atlantic cod and salmon from the Faroe Islands, often make guest appearances on our menu.
Expect entrees to include some of our favorites, including a rustic and tender skirt steak, crispy pork belly on a pile of gorgonzola mashed potatoes, short rib bourguignon topped with fermented daikon radish, rack of lamb with a carrot beurre blanc sauce, and simple salt-and-pepper slow-roasted chicken, sourced from Campanelli’s Poultry Farm in the western Catskills. Meanwhile, we’re always experimenting with housemade pastas and vegetarian recipes, especially when our garden is at its most glorious.
An assortment of breads are baked from scratch every day, from crusty sourdough to seeded dansk rugbrød. And perhaps dinner doesn’t feel entirely complete without treating yourself to one of our classic and simple desserts.
P.S.: We love butter!
DRINK
We offer a unique and ever-changing selection of natural and organic wines hailing from small (and often family-run) estates and vineyards that are dedicated to sustainable farming practices. Small-batch beers, lagers, pilsners, and ales are all brewed locally. Our always-evolving craft cocktail list features both surprises and modern classics. And for the non-alcoholic drinker, our zippy housemade sodas and herbal teas make people happy.
